‘We need to protect youths from drug addiction’

Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md. Tofayel Islam on Monday said drugs have become a big problem. We need to protect the children and youths of the society from drug addiction.

He also said some of those who get caught with heroin, yaba, phensedyl get acquitted from the cases, while others are sentenced to jail on different terms. Measures have to be taken so that sentence is still in action even after appeal for those who were jailed for 5 to 7 years. Moreover, copy of verdict of punishment and acquittal has to be sent to District Magistrate, departments concerned and the plaintiffs. Reports have to be submitted regarding the implementation and activities of the cases under the Customs Act and criminal cases.

He said that none is above the law. There are separate children’s courts for the children under 18 who consume dandy (Methyl methacrylate) and other drugs. They will be sent to Gazipur Juvenile Development Center for correction with the help of social services. Besides, all types of cases have to be settled quickly.

The Divisional Commissioner came up with the assertion while he was presiding over and speaking at the Regional Anti-Smuggling Task Force meeting, Divisional Law and Order Committee meeting, Divisional Investment Development Support Committee meeting, Divisional Birth and Death Registration Task Force Committee meeting, coordination meeting with Chief Executive Officers of Zilla Parishad, Divisional Revenue Conference and monthly coordination meeting of Deputy Commissioners held at Chattogram Circuit House on Monday morning. The office of the Divisional Commissioner organized these separate meetings.

Annual Performance Agreement 2024-25 was signed between the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners of the division at the meeting. Executive Magistrate and Private Secretary of the Divisional Commissioner S M Anik Chowdhury and Executive Magistrate Md. Fakhrul Islam presented the activities and progress of the previous meeting.

The Divisional Commissioner said theft, robbery, snatching, eve teasing, murder and rape incidents have been reduced to a great extent with the intervention of the authority. Earlier, 3 members of ‘Kishore gang’ were arrested. Police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard, Naval Police and other organizations concerned have to take necessary measures to strengthen patrolling on road as well as on waterways in order to stop smuggling of drugs, weapons, oil and other smuggled products through the border areas.

Chief Executive Officers of various Zilla Parishads, City Corporation representatives, RAB, Police, Coast Guard representatives and officials working in various government offices were present in the separate meetings.
