Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain inspected the water flow situation in Chattogram city after heavy rains.
He said, "There is no alternative to a coordinated initiative to permanently solve the waterlogging problem in the city. In addition to the drainage system under the CCC, the relevant agencies including WASA, CDA and Water Development Board will have to clean and repair the canals and drains properly. Waterlogging cannot be resolved without improving the drainage system. For this, the support of the city residents and inter-agency coordination are essential."
On Wednesday morning, he visited various parts of Kapasgola, Chawkbazar, Katalganj, Munshipukur Par, Badurtala and Tupi Wala Para areas and spoke to local residents.
During the inspection, two reasons were identified behind the waterlogging problem in the Katalganj-Buddhist Temple area. The main reason for the waterlogging was identified in the inspection as the lack of uninterrupted water flow in the large canal connected to the Hijra Canal and the Buddhist temple in the city. For this, the mayor directed the CDA to expedite the Hijra Canal renovation work and directed the CCC Cleanliness Department to extract more soil from the large canal connected to the canal.
The CCC Mayor said, "To relieve the city residents from the suffering of waterlogging, the CCC is urgently cleaning drains, pumping water and repairing broken and collapsed drains. However, for a long-term solution, I urge the government to increase the allocation and complete the mega project work quickly."
He said, "It is not enough to just leave the responsibility to the government, citizens must also be responsible on their own. They should develop the habit of not throwing garbage in drains and canals and throwing waste in designated places. The CCC is regularly cleaning and sanitizing, but if the people are not aware, a permanent solution to this problem is not possible."
During the inspection, CCC Senior Assistant Secretary Zillur Rahman, BNP leader Kamrul Islam, CCC officials and employees and local ward leaders. Local residents presented their various suggestions and demanded that the mayor take immediate effective action.
