Water-logging will be over: CCC chairman

An emergency meeting of the service providers was held in the Chattogram metropolitan area on Wednesday to resolve the waterlogging caused by heavy rains. In the next 7-10 days, measures will be taken to relieve the city dwellers from the problem of prolonged waterlogging during the monsoon season through a crush programme to identify the underlying causes of stagnant water due to heavy rains.

A four-member committee was constituted at the meeting comprising the Chief Engineer of Chattogram Development Authority and the Chief Engineer of Chattogram City Corporation, Project Director of Waterlogging Elimination Project, Chairman of CCC Waste Standing Committee.

 The committee will take action after inspecting and monitoring the waterlogging caused by the recent heavy rains.  Work force of Chattogram City Corporation, Mega Project Implementing Agency, Chattogram Port Authority, Water Development Board, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Chattogram WASA will co-operate in this activity.

CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury presided over the resolution of waterlogging caused by the recent heavy rains at the initiative of Chattogram City Corporation in the conference room of CCC temporary building on Wednesday afternoon.

An emergency meeting was held to seek the cooperation of all service providers and city dwellers in implementing the program.

Chattogram Development Authority Chairman M Zahirul Alam Dobhas, Additional Divisional Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman, Chattogram Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saleh Mohammad Tanvir, Chattogram City Corporation Secretary Khaled Mahmud, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam, Chattogram Development Authority Chief Engineer Kazi Hasan Bin Shams, Director of Mega Project of Waterlogging Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Shah Ali, Chief Engineer of Water Development Board Md. Ramzan Ali Pramanik, Chief Engineer of Port Authority Mahmudul Hossain Khan, Deputy Director of Local Government Department Badiul Alam spoke.

CCC mayor said that the suffering of the city dwellers in the recent heavy rains is very sad.  This emergency meeting to resolve this suffering.  We have unanimously formed a committee in this meeting.  The committee will quickly identify the problem and take effective action in the next 7-10 days.  We hope that we will not have to suffer like this again in this monsoon season.

Chattogram Development Authority Chairman M Zahirul Alam Dobhas said the city's service providers have no chance to blame each other for the water shortage.  Our main duty is to stand by the people and do what needs to be done.

Additional Divisional Commissioner Mizanur Rahman said the committee formed to take immediate steps to alleviate the water logging in Chattogram city should identify the problem quickly and take immediate short-term measures to prevent the suffering of all the service providers.

 Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saleh Mohammad Tanvir said the Chattogram people have been suffering unbearably due to the prolonged waterlogging caused by the recent heavy rains.  There is a possibility of more extensive rainfall in front.  Therefore, he opined that steps should be taken in this regard on an urgent basis. Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said Bangladesh is now on the development highway.  Once the construction of Bay Terminal and Matarbari Deep Sea Port is completed, Chattogram will be transformed into one of the world's leading port cities.

 Therefore, in order to alleviate the water shortage in Chattogram city, he called for modernization of waste management and taking measures to prevent man-made waste from flowing into Karnafhuli river.
