“It is very difficult to cross the Ulail-Banktown area of Savar on the Dhaka-Aricha highway for waste stenches as Savar municipality's piled all their wastes next to the highway”, Nazmul Hasan, a resident of Savar, expressed his huff to The Bangladesh Post on Saturday.

Nazmul Hasan said, “I don’t understand how the authorities of Savar municipality play such a foolish role, whereas all of the VIPs including our President, Prime Minister, foreigners constantly travel by the road and their are many important installations situated in this area. Therefore, I think the authority of Savar municipality should show more concern in this regard to protect the image of our country.”

Hazi Abdul Gani, Mayor of Savar municipality, told The Bangladesh Post, “The problem is created because our municipality does not have any specific space to dump wastes. Already we have signed an agreement with a waste management company of Finland to solve the problem, but the process is time consuming. We have sent the agreement papers to LGRD government ministry to approve.”

“After getting approval from the ministry, the project related papers would be sent to the Power, energy and mineral resource ministry for approval, then we can start the project operation. So, it’s may take about two years. So far I got to know that the authority of the waste management company probably selected a land and pledged for the project. The project will work to turn wastes into energy,” he added.

Meanwhile, this correspondent found that some employees were removing waste piled next to Dhaka-Archa highway at Ulail area using municipally waste management vehicle by denying strict embargo of municipality mayor, at midnight. When informed about the matter, the mayor said, “I will take necessary action against those, who removed wastes next to the highway denying my strict embargo.”

The Savar Mayor called upon the locals to be patient for a while, he said, “I hope we can complete the waste management project within two years and then this suffering of the citizens will no longer exist.”
