Voters seek fresh leadership ahead of BFF polls

With the highly anticipated Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) elections set for October 26, 57 candidates have purchased 62 nomination papers to compete for positions on the 21-member executive committee.

Out of the 133 total voters, the majority are new, with only 47 delegates retaining their voting rights from previous elections. Most voters are from districts, divisions, and clubs – 67 from districts and divisions, 52 from clubs – while only 14 voters represent universities, the coaches' association, referees' association, and women's sports association.

Ten current committee members are seeking re-election this year.

Delegates from various football associations have expressed a desire for leaders who will promote football beyond Dhaka and revive district-level tournaments like the Sher-e-Bangla Cup, Suhrawardi Cup, and school football. There is a general dissatisfaction with the management of football over the past 16 years, with a call for genuine leadership rather than candidates who buy votes.

The importance of financial support from the BFF and the government for district football has been highlighted, with voters indicating that their support will go to those committed to this cause. Integrity in candidates is also a key concern, with a preference for those willing to invest in football development rather than those looking to profit from it.

Reflecting on previous support for Kazi Salahuddin, some delegates noted that despite their admiration, Salahuddin had not elevated football as expected. This time, they plan to vote for candidates with long-term involvement in football.

There is a preference for candidates with a genuine interest in football over those with political affiliations. Comments on the mixed results of Kazi Salahuddin's tenure noted irregular league schedules and declining national team performance. A competitive election is seen as a potential solution to elect a responsible committee dedicated to improving the country's football.

The upcoming elections are viewed as a crucial opportunity to elect leaders who will advance football at all levels across Bangladesh.
