We are deeply concerned by Thursday’s violence in the city. Unidentified people set fire to the Jatiya Party (JP) central office in Kakrail while two workers were shot when garment workers took to the streets in Mirpur-14 area and clashed with police and military personnel, throwing stones and setting fire to two army and police vehicles.
According to media reports, a group of people—many wearing helmets and armed with sticks—entered the JP office through the main entrance. Chanting slogans, they tore down banners and festoons, vandalised furniture, and then set fire to the building's front and several rooms inside.
Attempts by police and military forces to disperse the crowd of RMG workers were met with fierce resistance as demonstrators hurled stones at law enforcement officials. In response, police resorted to batons to control the crowd. However, the situation escalated, leading protesters to vandalise and set fire to two vehicles belonging to the police and army.
On the other hand, the law enforcers fired several gunshots to disperse them, leaving the two garment workers injured. The situation took a drastic turn, transforming the usually bustling Kachukhet area into what locals described as a
“battlefield.”
Violence and crime in the capital
city of Dhaka and
elsewhere across the country are increasing
The incidents of violence and crime in the capital city of Dhaka and elsewhere across the country are increasing, creating panic among the people. All must remain united to fight against all forms of terror and violence.
We the people of Bangladesh will have to always stand by the incumbent interim government against those who want to make the country unstable. There is a necessity for all concerned to work together to maintain law and order immediately as apart from violence a considerable increase was witnessed in the cases of killing, robbery, mugging, extortion in the recent times.
Therefore, keeping the law and order situation under control in the country should be the first priority of the incumbent government. We think the government should remain beside the people in maintaining law and order for the greater national interest. It will also have to deploy members of different law enforcement agencies in strategic points in the city and other places of the country to provide overall security to public lives and important government facilities.
Along with other forces, the presence of the army will help control the law and order situation by quickly mitigating any sort of anarchy.
The law enforcement agencies must increase patrol, check posts and security measures in the capital immediately, especially at various strategic points to avert any unpleasant incident, including violence and vandalism.
Not only in the capital, there are also hotspots of Gazipur, Savar and Narayanganj where violent incidents are taking place every day. Besides, violence in other major cities, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet is also showing an upward trend for the last few days. Therefore, security is the utmost importance for all of us and no compromise should be made in this regard.
