We strongly condemn the barbaric murder

We are “shocked” and “deeply saddened” at the tragic death of a youth identified as Tofazzal Hossain at Dhaka University and a student named Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Molla at Jahangirnagar University after being lynched by some students on the respective campuses. We also strongly condemn these heart-touching, monstrous, and barbaric murders.

Recently there have been alarming incidents of mob violence resulting in the killing of people in various areas. Such acts of mob attacks are completely unacceptable.

Tofazzal Hossain was a familiar face to many resident students of Dhaka University. He would often wander about the campus, dorms, and gladly eat if somebody offered him food. According to his cousins he ‘lost his mind’ after the death of his parents and brother and became a drifter.

We wonder about those students of Dhaka University who tortured the 35-year-old Tofazzal Hossain, fed him, then murdered him. On the other hand, Shamim Ahmed alias Shamim Molla, a former leader of the  Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League, has died from injuries he had suferred after being lynched by students on the campus.

He died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment at Savar's Gonoshasthaya Samajbhittik Medical College Hospital. We were proud of our young generation especially university students who had fought to free the nation from the clutches of autocrat Sheikh Hasina. The general people of the country also lauded our students’ initiatives, saying the people have a lot to learn from the young generation.

It can’t be tolerated at all in this

 civilised world and no argument

can justify these killings and breach

 of humanitarian laws.

We had thought that our students would be able to build a new Bangladesh by utilising the opportunities that they have brought through a mass uprising. But the dreams of students may fade away in the wake of Wednesday and Thursday’s barbaric and heinous attacks on a youth and a student.

The opportunities that the youth have brought secrificing their bloods will go in vain if they (students) do not refrain themselves from such brutal actiivties. We think there is no reason that can justify the murdering of an innocent student and a youth. We also think this is one of the most horrific incidents of violence committed against two young people after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government .

It can’t be tolerated at all in this civilised world and no argument can justify these killings and breach of humanitarian laws. The students involved in the murders exposed the severe violation of human rights and laws which have immensely triggered civic feelings across the country.

The killing of two youths has already spurred widespread condemnation. People continued protesting across the country It is a ‘despicable crime’. We do not want to see such brutal killings. Stern actions must be taken if anyone takes the law into their own hands.

There are established legal procedures for trial if someone commits a wrong or a crime. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands.

People who are engaged in crimes must be handed over to the legal authorities; taking the law into one's own hands is not accepted in any circumstances. All will have to prevent further incidents of lynching and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

University authorities and law enforcement agencies will have to take stern action against the youngsters involved in murdering two youths on Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University campuses.

The law enforcement agencies will also have to take stern action to protect stability of the country by stopping the incidents of mob violence.
