Veteran singer Zeenat Rehana passes away at 81

Zeenat Rehana, the veteran singer best known for her timeless song ‘Shagorer Teer Theke’, passed away on Wednesday morning at a hospital in Dhaka. She was 81.

The first namaz-e-janaza was held after Zohr prayers at Gulshan Azad Mosque, followed by a second namaz-e-janaza at the Channel i premises at 3 pm. She was laid to rest at Banani Graveyard with family and friends in attendance.

Zeenat Rehana’s musical journey began in 1964 when she became a listed artiste of Bangladesh Betar. She gained widespread popularity after recording ‘Shagorer Teer Theke’ in 1968. She also started performing on television from 1965, capturing the hearts of many with her soulful voice.

Although her presence in the public music scene was limited due to her professional commitments with international organizations, Zeenat left an unforgettable mark with several classic songs. She released a total of 12 albums during her career, covering modern songs, spiritual melodies, and children’s music.

Some of her most notable songs include ‘Ekti Phul Ar Ekti Pakhi Bolto Ki Name Tomay Daki’, ‘Ami Kakon Diye Dekhechhilam’, ‘Kopale To Tikli Porbo Na’, and ‘Mone Rekho, Smriti Theke’. Her contributions enriched the cultural landscape of Bangladesh and continue to inspire many.

Zeenat Rehana had an academic background in political science, holding both a BA (Hon’s) and an MS degree from Dhaka University. She also enjoyed a long and successful career working in the NGO sector.

She was the wife of the late Mustafa Kamal Syed, a respected television personality and former Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Television (BTV), who passed away in 2020. Zeenat Rehana is survived by her son and daughter.

Her death marks the end of an era for many music lovers who remember her beautiful voice and unforgettable songs.
