The High Court (HC) is going to deliver its verdict over the legality of suspension of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah is set to deliver the verdict tomorrow (Thursday).

The court fixed the date on Tuesday (March 28) after the end of the hearing on the rule issued in this regard.

Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayan, Advocate MK Rahman, Barrister Belayet Hossain stood on behalf of Jahangir Alam in the court, while Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Mohammad Russel Chowdhury represented the state. Advocate Sanjida Khanam was on behalf of Gazipur City Corporation.

Earlier on August 14 in 2022, Jahangir Alam, who was suspended from the post of mayor, filed a writ petition in the High Court to get his post back. The writ challenged the legality of his suspension from the mayor post.

Barrister Moshiur Rahman Sabuj filed the writ petition on behalf of Jahangir Alam.

Later, on August 23, the High Court issued a rule asking the government to explain why the suspension of Mohammad Jahangir Alam from the post of Gazipur City Corporation mayor should not be declared illegal.

In September 2021, videos of Jahangir Alam making derogatory comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the Liberation War at a meeting went viral on social media.

On November 19 in 2021, the ruling Awami League expelled Jahangir Alam from his position in the party over the incident, which was followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.

The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.

On November 25, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives suspended GCC Mayor Jahangir Alam, six days after his expulsion from the Awami League.
