Vegetables get dearer

The prices of almost all types of vegetables have gone up by Tk 5-10 per kg in the markets of the capital during the week. 

Although the prices of vegetables have gone up, the prices of chicken and eggs have remained unchanged. The prices of fish, potatoes and onions have not changed.

On Friday, traders in different markets of the capital were seen selling small cauliflower for Tk 35-40 a piece. Big cauliflower is being sold at Tk 50-60 taka. A week ago, small cauliflowers were available at Tk 30 and large cauliflower at Tk 50. Along with cauliflower, the price of ripe tomatoes has also gone up. Ripe tomatoes, which were sold at Tk 25-30 per kg a week ago, are now being sold at Tk 40 per kg. 

Good quality ripe tomatoes are being sold at Tk 50, which was Tk 40 a week ago.

Eggplant is on the list of price increases with an increase of Tk 20 per kg and is being sold at Tk 80 to 100 per kg. Beans are being sold for Tk 60-70 per kg. Bean prices remained unchanged during the week.

However, the price of carrots has increased by Tk 10 per kg, now being sold at Tk 30-40 taka per kg, which was Tk 20-30 taka a week ago. Bananas are being sold at tk 80-90 taka per kg, which was Tk 60-70 taka a week ago.

Turnips are being sold at Tk 30-40 taka per kg. Red spinach seeds are being sold for Tk 10-15 taka and spinach seeds are being sold for Tk 15-20 taka.

Regarding the prices of vegetables, Mohammad Monir, a trader in Karwan Bazar, said that the supply of beans, cauliflower and ripe tomatoes was gradually declining. Moreover, some vegetables were damaged in the rain. Due to this the price of vegetables has gone up. 

“Our idea is that the price of vegetables will not decrease in the future but the price of vegetables will increase as the days go by,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has been seen that traders are selling broiler chickens at Tk 150-155 per kg. Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 250-280 taka per kg. The price of chicken has not changed during the week.

Onions, potatoes and eggs are on the list of prices unchanged. Onion is being sold at Tk 30-40 taka per kg. Potatoes are being sold at 15 taka per kg. A dozen eggs are being sold for Tk 110-115 taka.

In the fish market however, it has been seen that a kg of rui fish is being sold at Tk 280-450. Taki fish is being sold at Tk 250-350 taka per kg. Shoal fish is being sold for Tk 400-600 taka per kg. 

Hilsa fish weighing one kilo is being sold for Tk 1000-1200. Small hilsa fish is being sold for Tk 500-600 per kg. Shrimp is being sold at Tk 600-650 per kg. The price of fish has not changed much during the week.
