The vice-chancellor backed panel of pro-Awami League teachers won the Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (Juta) election on Monday. The panel bagged six posts including the key leadership positions while the rival panel a fraction of Al, BNP and leftist got the rest.
The 15-member executive committee of JUTA is composed of president, general secretary, vice president, joint secretary, treasurer, and 10 members. Prof Dr A A Mamun of Physics and Prof Mohammad of Economic department were elected president and general secretary respectively.
Prof Dr. A A Mamun got 271 votes, while his rival Prof M Sohel Rana bagged 265 votes. Prof Soyed Hafizur Rahman was elected vice president, Associate Professor Borhan Uddin joint secretary, and Prof M Motahar Hossain treasurer. The executive members are Professor Monowar Hossain,Associate Professor Umme Saika, Professor Ismot Ara,Assistant Prof Mahafuza Khatun,Assistant Professor Fakrul Islam,Professor Boshir Ahmed, Professor Ahmed Reza, Associate Professor Hosne Ara , Associate Professor Hossain Mohammad Sayem, and Professor Mahabub Kabir. The voting took place at the university teachers' club from 9:00am till 1:30pm. Out of a total of 598 voters, 560 cast their votes. Election Commissioner Prof AKM Abul Kalam announced the results around 6:00pm.
