VAT Intelligence filed a case against Lake Terrace restaurant for allegedly taking extra VAT from customers.
The case was filed on Tuesday alleging violation of VAT law after checking all the documents of the restaurant.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Director General of the VAT Intelligence Dr Moinul Khan confirmed it on Tuesday.
On Monday night, a team of VAT Intelligence conducted a raid at the Lake Terrace restaurant at Uttara in the capital.
The boss of VAT Intelligence said the Lake Terrace restaurant was collecting more VAT from the customers. But they did not deposit it in the government treasury.
Munawar Mursalin, assistant director of the VAT intelligence led the drive on Monday night following a complaint from the customers.
VAT intelligence personnel said, the restaurant was collecting 15 percent VAT from the customers. But according to the law, VAT should be collected 10 percent.
As per law, 10 percent VAT for air-conditioned (AC) restaurants and VAT 7.5 percent for non-AC restaurants.
After collecting the VAT from the Lake Terrace restaurant, which was not deposited, the VAT to be deposited in the government treasury.
During the raid, 295 bill vouchers were seized from the company, which levied 15 per cent VAT on each bill violating the rules.
It is learned that the restaurant filed zero returns in the last six months. In the last 2020-2021 financial year, it paid only Tk 6,000 VAT in 12 months.
VAT intelligence officials said the restaurant does not properly deposit the VAT, which were collected from customers to the government treasury.
Later, the case was filed on Tuesday after verifying all the documents found in the operation.
