UZ Vice-Chairman arrested for ‘killing’ old man

Police have arrested Sardar Moshiar Rahman, Vice-Chairman of Satkhira's Tala Upazila Parishad on chargs of killing an old man named Lutfar Nikari, 60. The incident took place at around 11pm on Monday at Ziyala Nalta under Sadar union of Satkhira's Tala upazila.

Arrested Upazila Vice Chairman Sardar Moshiar Rahman is also serving as the organizing secretary of Tala Upazila Awami League unit.

Ruhul Amin Nikari, nephew of the deceased, said that his cousin Selim Nikari, son of the deceased was fishing in the government canal of Nalbunia Beel at night. Vice Chairman Sardar Moshiar Rahman has a fish pond with that canal. 

Moshiar's accomplice Ronnie detained Selim accusing him of stealing fish from Moshiar's pond. Then Rony and some others beat up Selim and took him to Moshiar's house, he added. Selim Nikari's father Lutfar Nikari rushed to Moshiar's house after hearing the incident.  

As soon as Lutfar got there, Sardar Moshiar, Tuhin, Tuhin Sheikh, President of Tala Government College Chattra League unit and Rand beat the father and son together. 

At one point they strangled Lutfar with a ‘Gamcha’. When the father and the son both became unconscious they were sent to Tala Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty there declared Lutfar Nikari dead.

Hazrat Nikari, resident of the area said, “Selim Nikari is currently admitted into Tala Hospital. His eardrums are torn. We want justice for Lutfar's brutal murder”.

Meanwhile, the villagers surrounded the police station in a procession in Tala on Tuesday morning with the body of Lutfar Rahman demanding justice for the murder. At that time the villagers chanted slogans demanding the execution of the murderers.

Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Russell said Sardar Moshiar has been detained for questioning. Legal action will be taken in this case.
