The leaves of the betel nut tree, each extending up to approximately one meter in length, serve as the primary material for this innovative venture. The process commences with a meticulous regimen - the leaves are meticulously soaked in water and delicately brushed to ensure cleanliness. Following this, they undergo a drying period of three hours, an essential step that guarantees the ideal texture for subsequent phases.
Once suitably dried, these leaves are placed into a specialized heat pressure machine, which performs a transformative feat. The machine expertly molds and shapes the leaves, molding them into plates, cups, and bowls that can serve as disposable tableware. This process not only showcases the adaptability of natural materials but also provides a sustainable solution that can eventually help reduce the dependence on single-use plastics and metals.
One such factory, situated in Chattogram named Eco Valley BD is actively engaged in this eco-conscious endeavor. At the factory, workers are observed meticulously crafting these eco-friendly utensils from palm leaves or betel nut leaves. The Director of Sales and Marketing at Eco Valley BD recently spoke with the Bangladesh Post, highlighting their innovative approach to addressing environmental concerns by producing plates, bowls, and glasses from betel nut leaves as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics.
The company embarked on this journey in February 2021, initially importing a machine from India. Today, they proudly operate four machines, collectively capable of producing 4000 units per day. Notably, three of these machines were fabricated locally through independent initiatives, showcasing the company's commitment to self-reliance.
The Director expressed enthusiasm for the positive impact of their initiative, emphasizing its role in combatting the proliferation of plastic waste within the country. Although they faced challenges initially, their growing success has led them to contemplate expanding production capacity.
Regarding the sourcing of raw materials, the Director revealed that they procure betel tree leaves from Bhola Island. To bolster their production capabilities, they've established two additional machines on the island. Despite their remarkable progress, Eco Valley BD has not yet received governmental support.
Nevertheless, they've taken it upon themselves to raise awareness about their eco-friendly and biodegradable products, positioning them as a viable substitute for conventional plastics. The Director stressed that they've also formally requested government assistance and incentives to elevate their operations to new heights.
Acknowledging the high operational costs such as electricity and transportation, the Director underscored the necessity of government backing to foster the company's growth. The support, they believe, would significantly contribute to advancing their business objectives.
