Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries when it comes to climate change. Our environment and biodiversity are in a critical stage where intervention is highly needed.

At a recent international conference, speakers stressed the need for a comprehensive strategic plan to reserve the ecological biodiversity of the country. Both the government and civil society must work together with that goal in mind.

Both the public and private sectors should emphasize using renewable resource, improvement of energy efficiency and increased use of less or nonpolluting resources to save biodiversity.

Biodiversity is one of our greatest assets, and we must learn to preserve it for future generations. Sustainable development is needed as our country is rapidly evolving into a middle-income country. The aim for both government organizations and other agencies is to reduce environmental pollution by using renewable resources.

All stakeholders should be involved in the plan to reserve ecological biodiversity. Apart from the government and other agencies, people from all walks of life will have to come forward in order to create awareness to conserve the environment.

We must plan for sustainable development that prioritizes the environment instead of just the economic aspects of it. The government needs to subsidize industries using renewable resources and clean energy sources such as solar power, wind power and hydro power. The government must fund research to find sources of clean energy as well as to improve energy efficiency of existing sources. The government must work to bring in investment in energy infrastructure and subsidize energy for areas that need it the most.

Despite being a developing nation, Bangladesh’s commitment to generating and using clean energy has set an example for the rest of the world, particularly developed nations.

Climate change is a real threat and despite the majority of the pollution being caused by developed countries; it is countries like Bangladesh which stand to lose the most. In order to reduce the harmful effects of climate change, we must all prove our commitment to using clean energy and reducing our carbon footprint.
