US keen to support fisheries, livestock sectors

The United States is interested in providing assistance to the fisheries and livestock sector of Bangladesh.

A delegation from the US Embassy in Bangladesh paid a courtesy call on Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim at his office in the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon.

The Fisheries and Livestock Minister said, “We are fortunate to have a visionary leader like Sheikh Hasina. World leaders are praising Sheikh Hasina's leadership. She is managing everything with limited resources of the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes in maintaining excellent diplomatic relations with all countries. Bangladesh is a peaceful country. We, as a nation, do not believe in enmity with any country.”

He further said that Bangladesh has friendly relations with the United States. 

“There are many opportunities to work together on issues of mutual interest. The two countries have opportunities to exchange experiences and cooperate in the fisheries and livestock sectors. The two countries can adopt a joint plan in this regard,” he added. 

The Minister of Fisheries and Livestock highlighted the important role of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26). 

He also said that the United States could assist Bangladesh in tackling the risks of climate change. 

The Fisheries and Livestock Minister also expressed hope for further development of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States.

The Minister further said, “We have a specific goal to develop the poultry, livestock and fisheries sector. We look forward to the cooperation of the US Government on behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of Bangladesh in developing these sectors.”

Megan M. Francis, Head of Delegation at the US Embassy in Bangladesh and Agricultural Attaché at the United States Department of Agriculture's Overseas Agriculture Service, said, “Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a visionary leader. The two countries can work together to combat climate change risks and exchange information in this regard. There is ample opportunity for Bangladesh and the United States to work together to increase mutual cooperation in the fisheries and livestock sectors.” 

She further said that the representatives of Bangladesh can hold a detailed discussion with the Agricultural Department of the United States.
