Upgrade of Dhaka-Sylhet rail line demanded

Sylheti students living in the capital demanded repair of Dhaka-Sylhet rail line and introduction of non-stop train service on the line.

They raised the demand from a human chain formed in front of National Museum in the capital on Wednesday. 

Jalalabad Chhatra Kalyan Samity, a platform of Sylheti students of Dhaka University, arranged the programme to press home their five-point demand. The other demands include four-lane Dhaka-Sylhet rail line, and compensation to the victims of Kulaura train accident. 

Alongside the students of Dhaka University, the Sylheti students who are studying in different other educational institutes in the capital also joined the human chain.

President of Jalalabad Chhatra Kalyan Samity Md Shahriar presided over the progrmame and placed the five-pint demand, while its general secretary Tarek Aziz Chowdhury conducted the human chain. Member of Jalabad Association Selim Chowdhury, former acting general secretary of Jalalabad Chhatra Kalyan Samity researcher Alomgir Shahriar, BCL’s central leader Sayeed Khan Shaon, journalist Billah Hossain Sagor, MA Hasan, Razib Roy, Shirin Akhter and Jakia Chowdhury spoke on the occasion, among others.

Earlier on July 23 night, an intercity train derailed on Dhak-Sylhet rail line at Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar, killing at least five passengers and injuring over 200 others. 

The tragic accident took place as the lines and the bridge were faulty. Bamboo was used to support rail track sleepers on the bridge.
