UPDF man killed in Rangamati ‘gunfight’

An activist of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed in a ‘gunfight’ at Uju Bazar area at Baghaihat in Sajek union under Baghaichhari upaizla in Rangamati on Friday morning. 

 The deceased was identified as Sumon Chakma, 45, son of Bijoy Chakma of Bibachhara Village under Sajek union at the upazila.

According to the police, the incident took place when the armed terrorists attacked a moving army vehicle with gunshots at Uju Bazar area around 10:00 am in Sajek union. Then the members of security forces made a counter offensive with gunfire, as a result, Sumon Chakma was killed on the spot.

Officer in-Charge (OC) of Sajek Police Station Md Israfil Islam Mojumder confirmed the matter. 

The body was handed over to the victim’s family after postmortem on Friday evening, said the OC.   In a press release, UPDF protested and condemned the killing of Sumon Chakma. 

Sachal Chakma, organiser of Rangamati district unit, claimed that Sumon is innocent. He was picked up from Uju Bazar when he was sitting in a shop and he was beaten seriously.
