UNB, Khagrachhari: An activist of the Democratic Youth Forum, backed by the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), was shot dead by miscreants in Ugudochari village of Chengi Union in Panchhari Upazila on Sunday afternoon.
According to a statement signed by the organisation’s office secretary, Shyamal Chakma, the victim Khuku Chakma, 41, was gunned down around 3pm in what the Forum alleges was an attack by armed members of the Santu Larma-led faction of the Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS).
Khuku Chakma was a resident of Betchhari Christian Para in Kamalchhari Union of the Khagrachari district.
The organisation claimed that Khuku was on his way to visit a friend in Ugudochari when a group of around 20 armed individuals, allegedly led by Piklu Chakma of the JSS (Santu) group, intercepted and shot him in the leg. The attackers reportedly then took him into custody, executed him at gunpoint, and fled the scene.
Democratic Youth Forum central president Ziko Tripura strongly condemned and protested the killing, calling it a politically motivated act of violence.
However, Panchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin said that police have yet to receive any formal complaint regarding the incident. "We are not aware of any such event, no body has been recovered, and no one has lodged a report," he said.
