UP polls must be violence-free: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said, “Union Parishad elections must be free from violence and be peaceful and competitive. This is what we want all the time and it is happening.”

He said, “We strongly condemn the incident that took place in Jagdal village of Magura Sadar on October 15. It's a brutal loss of life. I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of those who have been killed.”

He was speaking as the chief guest at a meeting on law and order with concerned officials at the Magura Deputy Commissioner's conference room on the occasion of Union Parishad elections at around 11am on Thursday.

Additional Divisional Commissioner of Khulna Abdur Rashid, Khulna Additional DIG Nahidul Islam, Regional Election Commissioner Yunus Ali, Superintendent of Police Zahirul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr Shahidullah Dewan, District Election Officer Oliul Islam and Upazila Nirbahi officials were present at the time with Deputy Commissioner of Magura Dr Asraful Alom in the chair.
