Although there are over six months left until the Union Parishad elections, activities of probable candidates for Chairman, Ward Member and Reserved Women's Ward Members have increased in different parts of the country to gain support of the voters.
The Election Commission (EC) recently said that all types of local government elections would be held on scheduled time. The elections in Union Parishads across the country were held in several phases in 2016.
According to the law and the announcement of Election Commission, the next UP elections likely to begin from March in 2020.
The potential candidates for different posts in the UP elections have become active before six to seven months of the elections. Like several other parts, the potential candidates for Chairman and Members posts have become active at Bera upazila in Pabna to woo the voters.
Discussions and speculations have started among the people of respective unions about who is going to be the Chairman and Member candidates.
Many potential candidates have printed posters with their own pictures asking for the blessings of the locals and they are putting up those posters in different places of the respective unions.
In addition, many of them are attending various political and social events in their respective unions and visiting different areas to express their desire to be candidates in the forthcoming union council election.
In the meantime, many chairman and member candidates are maintaining contact with the party leaders and workers at the local union and upazila level as well as keeping in touch with the local MPs, upazila, district and central level leaders of the party so that he can be nominated from the party in the next election.
Leaders and activists of different political parties have already started talking to the people in the nine unions.
The names of the potential candidates for the post of Chairman of the nine unions in the next UP election includes Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Abu Bakar Siddique, Md. Amjad Hossain, Md. Shawkat Osman and many others.
It may be mentioned that on March 22, 2016, in the second phase, elections were held in 9 unions of Bera upazila. In all of them, the ruling AL nominated boat symbol candidates won and are working as the current UP Chairmen.
