A local union parishad member was arrested along with nine pieces of gold bars from Baikari border area in Satkhira Sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrested is Amjed Ali Morol, 45, a resident of Kaliani village under the sadar upazila. He is member of Ward no-1 in Baikari union parishad of the upazila.
Confirming the information, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB-33) officials added that on information, a team of BGB team, led by Baikari BOP subeder Qazi Badrul Alam, took place in Kaliani Madrasah mor area and arrested Amjed Ali red-handed along with the gold bars while trying to smuggle it. The estimate market value of the seized gold, weighing 1.45 Kg, is Tk 1,01,57,224, they said.
Satkhira BGB-33 Battalion commander Lt Col Md Ashraful Haque said they have also seized a motorbike from the arrested possession and he was later handed over to Satkhira Sadar Model Police Station.
Process to file a case in this regard ad handed over seized gold bars to Treasurer's Office was underway, added the BGB official.
