UP member Zahirul Islam, prime accused in the case filed for torturing two children in a medieval manner on the charge of stealing a mobile phone at Pirganj upazila in Thakurgaon, and one of his accomplices were arrested.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and DB Police arrested them from the district.
A team of RAB-13 arrested Zahirul Islam from border area of Haripur upazila in the district in the morning on Sunday. On the other hand, DB Police arrested another accused named Ziarul Islam on Saturday evening.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirganj Police Station Pradeep Kumar Roy confirmed the matter. He said that they are trying to arrest the rest accused.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Thakurgaon Dr KM Kamruzzaman Selim visited houses of the two victims at Sengaon union of Pirganj upazila on Saturday. He expressed apology for the incident. He assured that legal action will be taken against the culprits.
During the visit, the DC handed over food items and Tk 5,000 each family for treatment purpose.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Aminul Islam, Chairman of Pirganj Upazila Parishad Akhtarul Islam and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Pirganj Rezaul Karim were present at the time.
Earlier, a case was filed against the UP member of Sengaon union of Pirganj upazila for torturing two children in a barbaric way. Sharifa Khatun, a victim of torture, filed a case with Pirganj Police Station on June 5.
UP member of Ward No- 4 of Sengaon Union Zahirul Islam, Motaleb Ali and eight others were accused in the case. According to the case statement, Motaleb Ali had been making bad proposals to his neighbour Sharifa Khatun for a long time.
On May 22, UP members Zahirul Islam, Motaleb Ali and six others took Sharifa’s son Sumon (13) and his nephew Kamirul Islam (14) for stealing. They then held an arbitration meeting. The two children were handcuffed and beaten by the UP members and their associates.
That image of the barbaric incident was captured on camera. Later, he showed the video to housewife Sharifa Khatun and demanded Tk 50,000. Then the UP member and his associates tried to beat up Sharifa Khatun. Later, they took a cow from the housewife's house.
