At least five people including a local UP member were injured in a sudden attack by the opposition centring an arbitration meeting in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat on Saturday night. Three of the injured have been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, Partha Sarkar, 25, son of Maria Sarkar of Malgazi village in Chandpai union of the upazila, had an affair with the girl from the same area.
At one point, the girl became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. But for a long time, Partha did not acknowledged the girl and her daughter, so an arbitration meeting was held on Saturday evening.
In the arbitration of Chandpai Union Parishad, it was decided that Partha would accept the girl as his wife and marry her. Local people including UP Chairman Mollah Md. Tariqul Islam, local UP Member Jahangir Mallick, Mithakhali UP Chairman Md. Israfil Hawlader were present in the arbitration.
After leaving the Union Parishad following the arbitration, the followers of Partha launched a surprise attack on the UP member and his entourage at the corner of Malgazi Mission House on the way around 9:30 pm. At that time, Partha, his mother Maria, aunt Chandana, cousin Setu and several of their associates injured 5 people including UP Member Jahangir with sharp weapons.
In this regard, UP member Jahangir Mallick said, "Partha, his mother Maria and others attacked us and hacked injured us with sharp weapon because the decision made in the arbitration was not in their favour. Meanwhile, my brother Alamgir Mallick's condition is very bad. He, Rahat and Zahid have been sent to Khulna.
Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury said police were sent to the hospital, they saw and heard everything. Legal action will be taken in this case if any complaint is received.
