Houses meant for poor people have been constructed for a union parishad chairman in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah whom locals said are financially ‘solvent’ people.

Three houses meant for the homeless poor were constructed for two sons of Mirjapur union UP chairman Makbul Hossain’s elder brother Azibar Mandal and a son of Makbul’s another brother Mokaddes Mandal in Hudamailmari village.

According to sources, two houses under disaster tolerant programs of test relief and food for works (TR-Kabikha)) was allocated in 2019-20 and another house under “have land while no house” project.

Although the houses were meant for the homeless, these were constructed at the courtyard of union parishad chairman, also ex commander of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad Jhenidah district unit command Makbul Hossain.

They were allocated in the name of Nazrul Islam and Shamsul Islam, both sons of Mabul Hossain’s elder brother late Azibar Mandal, while another in the name of Amirul Islam, son of Mokaddes Mandal, another elder brother of the UP chairman.

As the houses were constructed, the locals had expressed their agitation over the construction. Locals said they could not protest the matter when the authorities had sanctioned three pucca houses.

One of Amirul’s son was serving as a senior officer of Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) and the family members are widely known as solvent.

A number of local poors requesting anonymity said they had requested several times to allocate a house for them, while the UP chairman had refused them and sanctioned three houses on their family lands in the village abide their well decorated building houses at Hudamailmari.

Office of the project implementation officer (PIO) in Shailkupa office sources when contacted said the UP chairman was the chairman of the project committees for constructing tow pucca houses at a cost of Tk 2.99 lakh.

The project implementation committee (PIC) had furnished all the activities as per the design. But the office of the PIO was not involved anyway with the selection of beneficiaries.

Another house was also constructed at the same yard in the house against some Samsul Islam, a nephew of the UP chairman during the tenure of previous upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).

When contacted UP chairman Makbul said a vested quarter is out to tarnish his images since the union parishad election is nearing.
