A new teachers’ organization named University Teachers Link (UTL) was officially launched on Saturday at the TSC cafeteria of Dhaka University, with the aim of promoting faculty dignity, academic integrity, and national responsibility.
Bringing together teachers from public and private universities across the country, UTL introduced itself not only as a platform but as a movement rooted in the spirit of the July 2024 mass uprising.
Themed “Knowledge, Faith, Self-Dignity, and Freedom”, the organization seeks to advance education, research, freedom of thought, and professional ethics—free from political influence.
At the event, a central convening committee was announced. Md Ataur Rahman Biswas, chairman of DU’s Department of Islamic History & Culture, was named convener, and Dr Mohammad Bilal Hossain, associate professor at Jagannath University, was named member secretary.
In his statement, Dr Bilal Hossain said that the awakening created by the July uprising has reshaped the nation's consciousness. He emphasized the need for a teachers’ platform that ensures academic integrity, safe campuses, research excellence, and contributions to national policy-making.
“UTL is born from this necessity. It is not just an organization—it is a teachers’ movement,” he added.
He called on teachers who believe in education’s power to shape a just and moral society to join this platform and build a professional, ethical, and nationally committed teaching community.
Family members of martyrs from the July uprising and faculty members from different universities also shared their thoughts during the inauguration, marking the beginning of what many described as a significant step for Bangladesh’s academic community.
