The government has taken a unique approach to detect tuberculosis (TB) by using mobile X-ray van. Those diagnosed with TB will get free treatment. Health Minister Zahed Male launched the initiative in Dhaka on Sunday. BRAC, the largest NGO in the world, will help implement the programme.

The early and accurate detection of TB is the key to combat the infectious disease. The government in 2019 detected 292,942 TB patients. But many remained still missing. Improving diagnostic methods help in starting early treatment and fewer transmissions of the disease.

Keeping this in mind, the National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) of the government and the BRAC took the initiative through a high-tech mobile x-ray van.

To speed up the TB control programme, BRAC will implement this programme under the supervision of NTP.

Two vans would start its programme from March. They will serve in different slum areas, garment factories and three prisons at free of cost. The three prisons which would be under the coverage are Kashimpur, Chattogram and Shylet. Another van will also cover the forcibly displaced Myanmar national (FDMN) area in Cox’s Bazar refugee camp.

The vans would be equipped with X-ray screening and GeneXpert machine and everyday 50-80 person would be able to access the treatment at free of coat.  It will have 1 lab technician and 1 radiographer. To cover the wide population, two more x-ray vans would be introduced by July-August this year.

Besides the opening of the x-ray vans, special cultural programme, drama show and concert were organised for the occasion of the upcoming World TB Day which would be observed on March 24.
