Shyamnagar (Bagerhat) Correspondent: The construction of the wash block at Uttar Kadamtala Government Primary School in Shyamnagar has remained incomplete for over two and a half years, causing serious inconvenience to its students. Over 150 students have been forced to cross a busy road daily to use the washrooms of a nearby institution.
According to sources at the Upazila Public Health Engineering Office, the project, worth Tk 18.71 lakh, was awarded to Sourav Traders after a tender process. Work on the wash block began on May 16, 2023, and was originally scheduled for completion by May 30, 2024. However, due to intermittent progress, the construction remains unfinished, leaving students in ongoing hardship.
As the school is designated a parliamentary polling station, the Bagerhat District Election Officer, Md. Abu Ansar, issued a letter on November 9 instructing the school authorities to make the washroom usable. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Election Commission Ministry’s senior secretary, the Bagerhat District Commissioner, and other relevant offices.
School headmaster Md. Abdur Rahman and scout leader Mizanur Rahman stated that students continue to risk their safety while crossing the busy road to access nearby washrooms. Despite notifying the Upazila Public Health Engineer, work has stalled.
Upazila Public Health Engineer Md. Mehedi Hasan said the wash block work is currently underway at another school. Once that is completed, this school’s project will resume. “Given its status as a polling center, priority will be given, and the work is expected to be completed and handed over by December,” he added.
