State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has said that ambassadors stationed in Dhaka need to understand the political history of Bangladesh before making any public statement. He made the remark at a telephone conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman on Thursday. Issues relating to mutual priorities in the bilateral relations and mutual commitment to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations - 1961 were discussed during the conversation.
There are criticisms on US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas’ acceptance of a request from ‘Mayer Daak’ and his visit to the house of a person, who had disappeared in 2013, terming the incident as biased and politically motivated. Instead of going to the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial, Haas visited the home of Sajjadul Sumon (Sajedul Islam), who went missing in 2013 on Martyred Intellectuals' Day.
The US is our close development
partner and the country has
immense contribution to the
path of our development
Western nations tell us to improve our human rights situation, while it’s them, who have been providing shelter to the killers of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred intellectuals. Their comments on the internal affairs of Bangladesh are obscene and against diplomatic norms and etiquettes.
The US is our close development partner and the country has immense contribution to the path of our development. Our relationship is very warm and we think that the incident would not impact our relation. We also want to request the US ambassador and envoys of different western countries to remain alert if anyone tries to give them wrong information.
They also must refrain from talking about Bangladesh’s elections and politics as such statement is a violation of diplomatic norms and values. Bangladesh is fully committed to ensure security and safety of the diplomatic community in Bangladesh. So, the foreign ambassadors should maintain the Vienna convention.
