Uncapped Abell ruled out of Bangladesh series

Tom Abell lost the opportunity to earn his first international cap when a side strain prevented him from traveling with England on their upcoming tour of Bangladesh.

The first ball of Abell's third over in the England Lions' victory over Sri Lanka A in Colombo on Wednesday caused him to strain his left side. Abell is the captain of Somerset and bats in the middle order.

“Tom Abell has been ruled out of the England Men’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh after suffering a side injury during yesterday’s England Lions match in Colombo,” an ECB spokesperson has said.

“Abell underwent a scan today, after he suffered the injury while bowling against Sri Lanka A, and is set to return home to begin his recovery” he added.

For the T20I and ODI legs of the tour, which runs from March 1–14, England initially named 15-man squads, but they announced on Thursday that they would not name a replacement for Abell.

England to arrive in Dhaka next Friday ahead of the first ODI on March 1. The three ODIs are part of the ICC's Super League, though both teams have already secured qualification for the 2023 World Cup.
