UK launches e-visa for foreign students

The United Kingdom (UK) has introduced an electronic visa (e-visa) system for international students, including those from Bangladesh. From 15 July, Bangladeshi students applying for UK student visas will no longer receive a physical sticker (vignette) in their passports.

According to a report by the Economic Times, the UK government has officially phased out the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), replacing it with a fully digital e-visa system. In the coming months, Biometric Residence Cards (BRC) and passport visa stickers will also be gradually replaced with digital records.

All visa details will now be securely stored in a digital UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account. Students must carry their passport and e-visa account information when entering the UK. This system allows for real-time verification or updates from any location.

However, visa stickers will still be issued in limited cases, such as for dependents (spouses and children) of student visa holders.

The UK Home Office has stated that the aim is to make border access easier and safer, while also taking a major step forward in the digitization of immigration services. Through the e-visa system, students will be able to manage their visa status and update information online at any time.

Before boarding a flight to the UK, students are strongly advised to complete a few important steps. They must create a UKVI account and link it with the passport they will use for travel. It is essential to confirm that the e-visa has been issued and properly connected. A printed or digital copy of the e-visa approval letter should be carried to show at immigration if needed. Additionally, if a student has renewed or changed their passport, they must update the passport details in their UKVI profile.

This transition to e-visas marks a significant modernization of the UK’s immigration system, aiming to ensure smoother and more secure travel for international students.
