UGC calls for proper assessment of online education

Professor Dr Muhammad Alamgir, a member of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC), has called for proper assessment of students in online education at home during the pandemic epidemic.

He said, "Assessment has become a major barrier to online teaching in higher education. We have to make sure that the assessment of the students is correct. If there is any question about assessment, the achievement of online education will be questioned.”

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the 'Virtual Speaker Program on Online Assessment Strategies' jointly organized by the Bangladesh University Grants Commission and the American Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday night. Dr. Muhammad Alamgir said, “The UGC has conditionally approved online education so that students do not move away from their studies and fall into large-scale sessions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He said that arrangements have been made to solve the problem of students' devices and internet to continue online education. The draft ‘Blended Learning Policy’ has been finalized so that Bangladesh does not lag behind in higher education. The country's higher education sector must move forward with the help of technology.

He added that everyone attending the event will be able to learn online learning assessment, challenges and transition strategies, as well as apply them in the workplace.

The keynote address at the event was entitled "Assessing Learning Online: Objective Assessments and Addressing Cheating" by Associate Professor Dr. Stephanie L. Moore.

The event was hosted by Raihana Sultana, Cultural Affairs Specialist at the US Embassy in Dhaka. More than six hundred teachers from public and private universities of the country took part in the program.
