A Narayanganj court on Sunday awarded death sentence to tow people for killing an auto-rickshaw driver at Sonargaon in the district. The convicts are Md. Gaffar, 34, and Masud Rana, 31, of Bandar upazila.
Additional district and sessions judge Umme Soarbun Tohura handed down the judgment in the crowded courtroom in absentia of the accused.
The court also fined one lakh taka each and if default, six months suffer more. In another section the court also convicted for seven years and fined fifty thousand taka each.
According to case statement, driver Mamun Mia went missing on July 12,2012 from Bandar upazila and body was found at sonargaon upazila just the following day. On the night of the disappearance, some unknown person called Mamun’s mother through cell phone to pay three lakh taka ransom. The deceased's mother Sufia Begum filed a murder a case with Soanrgaon police station against unknown accused.
The court inspector Asaduzzaman said that the court examined 19 witnesses and pronounced the penalty.
Among the three accused one was acquitted in the judgement.
