Two teenage boys drowned in a pond named ‘Julumsagar’ in Dinajpur district town on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Dipu Roy, 15, son of Chandan Roy of Chatrapara area in the district town, and Raja, 19, son of Abdur Rashid of Mission Road area in the town. Dipu Roy was a student of Saint Joseph School while Raja was mason by profession.

Jahidul Islam, sub-inspector of Dinajpur Kotwali police station, said the duo were riding a boat on the pond when Depu fell into the water and drowned. Raja also drowned while trying to save Dipu, he said.

They were taken to MA Rahim Medical College Hospital where the on duty doctors declared them dead.

It was alleged that the duo died due to negligence of the authorities. Locals Nazma Begum, Mujibur Rahman and some others said that the pond ‘Julumsagar’ was leased by owner of Monota Decorators from Dinajpur municipality. Owner of Monota Decorators is liable for the death as they kept a boat in the pond carelessly.
