Two smugglers arrested with 19 deer hides in Bagerhat

Police arrested two smugglers with 19 deer hides from Sharankhola in Bagerhat in the early hours of Saturday. Preparations were underway to file a case in this regard and hand the detainees over to the court.

The arrestees are identified as Md. Ilias Howlader, 35, son of Md. Matin Hawlader alias Moti Kazi of Rajoir village in Sharankhola upazila and Md. Monirul Islam Sheikh, 48, son of Md. Mosharraf Sheikh of Bhadrapara village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila.

A team of Bagerhat District Detective Brunch (DB) of Police recovered the hides from the floor of Monir's house adjacent to Rayenda bus stand in Sharankhola Upazila.

Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra Roy informed this at a press briefing at Bagerhat district police conference room on Saturday noon. Additional Superintendent of Police Mir Shafin Mahmud and Md Mizanur Rahman of Bagerhat were present at the time.

The SP said that district DB police members received secret information that deer hides were being sold at Monir's house. Therefore, they raided Monir's house and arrested those two while, few other unidentified persons escaped. Later, the police members recovered 19 deer hides stored in two bags searching the floor of Monir's house. He further said that accused Md. Ilyas Hawladar is a professional venison and hide trader and a case is pending against him in the court for hunting deer from Sundarbans.
