Police recovered the bodies of two sisters from the rooftop of a building in Majumdari area in Sylhet city on Tuesday morning (September 20).

The deceased were identified as Rani Begum, 33, and Fatema Begum, 27, daughters of Kalim Ullah of the area.

Khan Mohammad Mainul Jakir, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station in Sylhet, confirmed the matter. He said that police recovered the bodies hanging from an iron rod on the roof of the building. The bodies were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police suspect that the two sisters committed suicide over family feud.

According to police and locals, after Kalim Ullah’s death, his wife along with children, including and Rani and Fatema, lived in the house and refrained from interacting with the neighbours. The couple’s other daughter relocated to the UK after her marriage.

Around 6:00 am on Tuesday, neighbours found the bodies of the two sisters and informed the police.

Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludhi, tcouncillor of Ward-4 in the Sylhet City Corporation, told the Bangladesh Post that Rani and Fatema lived with their mother and two brothers after their father passed away. Rani had studied until class IX and Fatema had a Master’s degree. Family disputes had been a frequent occurrence at the residence and an argument had occurred between members of the family on Monday afternoon as well, he added.

Recently the family had been speaking to a Bangladeshi expatriate living in London about marrying Rani. The would-be groom is about 50-years-old and has two children, said their brother Rajon Ahmad.

Rani did not want the marriage and Fatema supported her sister. The two sisters had a quarrel with their mother on Monday evening and at one point left their house for their uncle’s house. The sisters returned that night and went to sleep after dinner, Rajon said. Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludhi also echoed the same.
