Nazir Hossain and Nur Alam, two brothers of village Rajballav under Ulipur upazila under Kurigram district have become self-reliant by setting up a rope making factory at their house.

It is learnt, Nazir Hossain passed SSC in 2001 and took a job at a rope factory in Muktarpur of Munshiganj district in 2003 at a salary of Tk 6,000 per month. Later, his younger brother also joined at the factory as a Mechanics. After working there for about 20 years, they abandoned the job and by procuring a loan of Tk 250,000, they set up a small rope making factory at their house named 'Nazir Hossain Dori Ghar'. At present, five workers are employed in their factory.

The rope making factory has been set up inside the tin-shed house where 15 machines have been installed. Nazir Hossain himself supervised the works of five female workers. If any machine develops trouble Nur Alam repaired that. Various types of ropes, thin, middle-sized and thick in varieties of colours are being prepared in the factory. They were happy with their work but due to the load-shedding of electricity and the lack of sufficient funds, they were yet to achieve their desired goal.

The tape-rope prepared in the factory is popular among farmers to tie cows, goats and sheep. The thick ropes are used for fastening goods on vans, trolleys and  trucks.

Aminul Islam of the village Rajballav informed, good quality ropes are prepared in the factory. He went to the factory to purchase ropes for fastening five of his cattle heads.

Nur Mohammad, father of Nazir and Nur Alam, informed, both of his sons went to work in a rope factory in Dhaka in 2003. They worked there for a long time but later they abandoned their jobs and set up their own rope factory in the village.

Female workers in the factory Lucky Begum and Raoshan Ara said they never thought that the rope factory would be set up in the village. They were earning Tk 200 to 250 daily by working in the factory.

Nur Alam informed, at first they started the factory with four machines, now 15 machines have been set up and are in operation. At present 60 kilogrammes of rope is being produced which is comparatively less in capacity. The load shedding of electricity was the main reason for the less production in the factory, he added.

Nazir Hossain said, he took a loan of Tk 250,000 and his father also assisted them with a sum of money to set up the factory. He further said both brothers dreamed of setting up a large factory where more people of the village would be provided in jobs. He sought government cooperation to extend the factory.

Shah Zonaed Hossain, Deputy Manager of BSCIC, Kurigram, informed, if they contacted him, he would talk to them, identify the problems and try to solve those.
