Two people, including a minor child, were burnt to death at Lighthouse area in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday night. Four members of Fire Service and Civil Defense were injured in the incident.

The deceased were identified as Atiqur Rahman, 35, of the area and his step-daughter Sadia Akhter, 5. Sadia is daughter of Abdul Monaf.

The fire originated at the house of Atiqur Rahman at Kolatoli of Lighthouse area at about 9:00 pm and engulfed the adjoining ones, said Abdul Malek, deputy director of Cox's Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defense. The fire left Atiqur Rahman and Sadia injured in the incident, he said, adding that they later died in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control, said Abdul Malek. Senowara Begum had been living with her third husband Atiqur Rahman, and daughter Sadia, 6, in the house. Senowara had a feud with her second husband Abdul Monaf, who is father of Sadia.

Citing locals who had seen Abdul Monaf fleeing the scene, Senowara alleged that Monaf locked her house from the outside at night and set it on fire pouring petrol.  She managed to escape but her third husband Atiqur Rahman and Sadia, Senowara and Monaf’s child, were burnt to death.

Farid Uddin Khandakar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said that he sent policemen there  fter learning about the incident. They are investigating the matter, he added.  Md Idris, senior station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense in Cox’s Bazar, said that they doused the fire in the night.
