The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two people, including the prime accused, in connection with the murder of a Qatar expatriate allegedly stemming from a love triangle in the capital.
The arrestees are Md Sajidul Islam Sajid, 24, the second accused, and Al Amin Hossain Joy, 27, the prime accused, said RAB-3 in a statement.
Sajid was arrested around 2am on September 7 from the Hajibari-Balurpar area under Khilgaon Police Station, within 12 hours of the murder. Acting on information provided by him, RAB arrested Joy around 5am the same day from the Shekher Jaiga Bazar area, also under Khilgaon Police Station.
According to RAB, the victim, Sifat Ullah, 27, had been living in Qatar and returned to Bangladesh about one and a half months ago. He had been in a long-term relationship with Nafiza Sheikh Neha, 23.
Sajid had also allegedly been in a relationship with Neha for more than four years but was unaware of her relationship with Sifat. He reportedly learned about it at Neha’s birthday celebration on August 25, after which his relationship with her ended.
Joy had previously studied with Neha at Madartek Abdul Aziz High School and was known locally as a criminal, RAB said. He allegedly used to visit Neha’s rented room with friends to consume drugs. Sifat had reportedly objected to their visits, leading to resentment.
On September 6 around 3pm, Sifat went to Neha’s rented room in Madartek’s Baraitala area on a motorcycle. After learning of his arrival, Yasin, Anik, Tuhin, Raju and several others went there, while Joy remained downstairs.
An altercation broke out inside the room, leaving Yasin and Raju injured. As Sifat tried to flee on his motorcycle, Joy’s associates allegedly threw bricks at him from behind. After he fell, Joy allegedly struck him on the head with a stick, while the group attacked him with sharp knives.
Locals took Sifat to Mugda Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
RAB said efforts are underway to arrest the other suspects. Legal proceedings against the two arrested men are underway.
