Two primary school students went missing as a boat capsized in Sangu River in Chingri Jhiri area adjacent to Padmamukh under Tindu Union in Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban on Monday. The incident occurred when they were going to school.
The missing students were identified as Shanti Rani Tripura, 10, daughter of Mutijan Tripura, resident of Harishchandra Para area under Ward No. 5 in No. 2 Tindu Union Parishad and Fulbani Tripura, 9, daughter of Nilapru Tripura, resident of the same area. Local sources said Shanti Rani Tripura and Fulbani Tripura were going to school in a boat with 5 to 6 other people from Harishchandra Para at around 9:30am. When the boat reached at the middle of the river, the boat capsized due to the strong current. The others were able to swim ashore at that time. However, the two students went missing.
Tindu Union Parishad Chairman Bhagyachandra Tripura said the two students of third and fourth grade went missing while going to Runadan Para from Harish Chandra Para as the boat capsized. Their rescue effort to find the students is still on. Firefighter leader of Thanchi Fire Service and Civil Defence Peyar Mahmud confirmed the matter.
They were not able to conduct rescue operation at that time due to the bad weather.
Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Shah Mujahid Uddin confirmed the matter as well and said he heard the matter.
