State-owned Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) Limited is likely to stage a comeback soon as it has started producing various digital devices to cope with the people’s expectations and the national demand as well.

The government-owned telecoms company of Bangladesh could not attain its goal due to incomplete organogram, service rule complexity and weak marketing policy.

However, initiatives have been taken to reshape this organisation. Towards attaining this goal, several steps have already been implemented. Some are going to be implemented, a top official said.

This reporter visited its Tongi office and factory recently. It was seen that the company was producing various types of products like desktops, notebooks, tabs, biometric devices, multimedia projectors, sound boxes, smart pre-paid energy meters and other digital devices.

Engineer Fakhrul Haider Chowdhury, Managing Director of TSS, told The Bangladesh Post that two main problems of the organisation are absence of a full-fledged organogram and marketing policy. The complete organogram was approved in October last and measures have been taken for an effective market policy, he added.

According to TSS, currently there are 5 sales and service centers in Dhaka and one each in Khulna, Rajshahi and Chottogram.

“We have taken initiatives to set up sales and service centers in 64 districts across the country. Hopefully this work will be completed in the next two years and people will get the best services soon,” he further said.

The official said TSS is going to set up a battery factory for the telecom sector. A Chinese company has already been offered in this regard as negotiations are underway with them. Besides, initiatives have been taken to assemble Electronic Cash Register in New Year.

A project has already taken to make TSS a fully-digitalized organization. Under this project, a new building will be built and modern equipment will be set up there. The Finance Ministry has already approved the project and now it is waiting for final approval of ECNEC. Once implemented, the capacity of TSS will increase a lot.

However, some officials said the laptop price was only taka 10 thousand. At that time even a fairly good quality smart mobile phone was not available in the same price. The quality of the product was not maintained while reducing the price. As a result, many people bought laptops at cheaper prices, but due to lack of quality, TSS's market was collapsed.

On the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary, TSS has brought BB-2020 model laptop in the market. This world class laptop with Quad Core (I-7, Generation-9) will cost only taka 72 thousand. But the price of the same quality laptop in the market is more than one lakh taka. Besides, some laptops of other models are also being made here for the people, the prices of which are much less than other companies, TSS sources said.

TSS has started producing smart prepaid meters in the country for the first time. The world-class electric meter is being produced in our factory that has the capacity to produce 5 lakh meters every year. It has already supplied 2 lakh meters to DESCO and some 30,000 meters to REB.
