To ensure safe and hassle-free travel for homebound passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha 2026, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has decided to suspend the movement of trucks, covered vans, and lorries on highways in the Chattogram region from May 25 to May 31.
The decision was made at a special road safety meeting held on Monday at the CMP headquarters conference room in Dampara. The meeting was chaired by CMP Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali.
According to officials, the initiative has been taken to reduce traffic congestion on highways, prevent road accidents, and ensure comfortable travel for passengers during the Eid rush. However, vehicles carrying sacrificial animals, essential commodities, medicines, port cargo, and garments products will remain exempt from the restriction.
Speaking at the meeting, the CMP Commissioner said strict legal action would be taken against unfit, faulty, and unlicensed vehicles to maintain discipline in the transport sector. Transport operators were also warned against charging excessive fares and carrying passengers in goods-laden vehicles.
The meeting also decided to strengthen traffic monitoring at several key points in the city, including Dampara, Alankar, AK Khan, EPZ, Port area, Oxygen intersection, Bahaddarhat, Shah Amanat Bridge area, and Kadamtali Terminal to ensure smooth traffic movement.
In addition, separate vigilance and monitoring teams comprising representatives from CMP, BRTA, and transport owners’ and workers’ associations will be formed to oversee the implementation of the measures.
Among others present at the meeting were CMP Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Wahidul Haque Chowdhury, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic-North) Nesar Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic-West) Nishkriti Chakma, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic-South) Mohammad Liaqat Ali Khan, senior CMP officials, and representatives of relevant stakeholders.
