Tree plantation along Padma embankment starts

Tree plantation along the embankment of the river Padma from Alupatti to Talaimari starts recently. Financed by the European Commission, the tree plantation programme is being implemented jointly by Rajshahi City Corporation and the ICLEI South Asia.

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Kharuzzaman Liton inaugurated the activities of the tree plantation programme by planting an Ashoka tree sapling at Panchabati area recently.  Under this programme, more than 900 saplings of 35 species of flowers, fruits and herbal tree-saplings will the planted along the embankment. The programme will make the embankment site green and increase its beauty. 

During the Tree Plantation function, RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said, Rajshahi City is now clean and a city of greenery and flowers. For further greening the city, trees are being planted. He added, he had taken the Project of broadening road from Alupatty to Talaimari during his first tenure of Mayorship but the work did not proceed while he was not elected Mayor later on. He said, after taking the charge of Mayor for the second time, he started the work again. The Alupatty to Talaimari road will turn to one of the beautiful roads in South Asia when the works of broadening the road and the beautification beside the embankment along the road will be completed. 

Among others, the function was addressed, by Councillor of ward-24 Arman Al, Councillor of ward-23 Mahatab Hossain Chowdhury and Reserved zone-8 Councillor Nadira Begum. The function was attended, among others, by RCC Secretary Abdu Hayat Md. Rahmatullah, ICLEI Country Representative Zubayer Rashid, Project Officer Abdullah Al Kafi and Environment Development Officer of RCC Syed Mahmudul Haque.
