Five persons including four children were killed and two others went missing as a trawler was capsized in Turag river at Aminbazar area in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Saturday.
Three of the deceased were identified as Shiuly Begum, 20, Imran, 03, Arman, 04. However, the identity of the other deceased could not be known immediately, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control room of Dhaka said.
BIWTA Joint Director Fazlur Rahman said, “We have Md Prince Hawlader, Station Officer at Assistant Director’s office of Fire Service and Civil Defense of Dhaka said, “We have recovered three bodies and the capsized trawler. After conducting rescue operation bodies of two others.”
Quoting locals, Prince Hawlader said, “The trawler capsized after being hit by a sand-laden cargo vessel around 6:00 am at Koilar Ghat area of Aminbazar in Savar on Saturday. Later on information, firefighters rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. A total of 18 passengers were on the trawler. 11 of them managed to swim ashore.”
“However, it is feared that others were drowned in the river,” locals said.
Police sources said that they were trying to identify the sand-laden cargo vessel.
