Transport owners, workers of Rajshahi region threaten strike from March 8

Transport owners and workers of Rajshahi division have issued of a warning that they would go for indefinite strike from March 8 if their eight-pint demand is not met.  The Rajshahi Divisional Transport Owners-Workers Joint Committee issued the warning on Saturday. 

Their demands include the arrest of the attackers who set fire to the Bogura Motor Owners Group's office and Bus Terminal assaulting owners-labors and vandalized vehicles to overthrow the elected committee in 9 February. They committee are demanding the removal of Bogura Additional District Magistrate as well.

If these demands are not met by March 6, the owners and workers will start an indefinite transport strike in Rajshahi division from March 8. The departmental leaders made the announcement demanding the arrest and trial of the armed attackers at a protest rally organized by the Bogura’s transport owners ‘joint workers’ committee in Charmatha Century Motel on Saturday afternoon. 

The assembly presided over by Rafiqul Islam, acting president of Rajshahi Divisional Transport Owners Workers Joint Committee demanded withdrawal of cases filed against 33 people including Aminul Islam, general secretary of the motor owners' group. They also asked to release the detained workers and compensation for setting fire to cars, offices and motorcycles.

President of Bogra District Truck, Tanklery and Cover Van Owners Association Abdul Mannan Akand, President of Rajshahi Divisional Transport Owners 'Association Safkat Manzur Biplob and the leaders of Divisional Owner-Worker association Mahatab Hossain Chowdhury, Salauddin Khan Tipu, Shah Mohammad Akhtaruziq and others spoke on the occasion.

Speakers at the meeting expressed outrage at the illegal occupation of the Bogra District Motor Owners Group's office and bus terminal by outcomers-identified terrorists and attempts to overthrow the elected committee, arson, vandalism of cars, arrest and trial of armed attackers on owners and workers. They demanded to windraw the false cases.

Another demand arose that any driver or helper in a road accident would not be arrested until convicted through an investigation. 

To mention, 15 people including a police and a journalist were injured in a clash between the Bogra District Motor Owners Group on 9 February. Municipal councilor Juba League leader Aminul Islam, district Awami League joint general secretary Manjurul Alam Mohan and police have filed three separate cases with Bogra Sadar Police Station over the incident.
