Transparency to ensure good governance stressed

Speakers at a workshop on Sunday stressed the need for ensuring transparency, accountability and utmost sincerity of local public representatives to implement government projects smoothly for good governance.

“The government has taken series of sustainable development activities for strengthening Union Parishads to reach services at the people door steps to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) by 2041,” they said while addressing the work shop at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in Khulna city.

Organised by the Department of Local Government of Khulna District Administration, a district level inception workshop on progress and achievement of local governance support project-3 (LGSP-3) was held with Deputy Director of the Local Government Division of Khulna District Administration Md Yousup Ali in the chair.

Aiming to strengthen UPs to get easy people service, the government has been implementing LGSP-3. Under the project, government has been giving bulk allocation from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2022.

Ex-president of Khulna district unit of Muktijoddha Command Council Freedom Fighter Sarder Mahbubur Rahman, Khulna Press Club President and general secretary S M Nazrul Islam and Mamun Reza, President of Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) Faruk Ahmed, Union Parishad Chairmen, NGO personnel, among others, addressed the workshop.

Md Yousuf Ali said capacity buildings of UP are enhancing and transparency and accountability through people participations by implementing of LGSP-3.

Under the project, government has been giving bulk allocation to 16 Pourashavas, two in each division. Government officials, UP chairmen, NGO representatives, media personnel and stakeholders attended the workshop.
