Promising photojournalist Shabnam Sharmin was found dead at her Maghbazar residence in capital Dhaka on Tuesday night.

A former photojournalist of the Bangladesh Post, Shabnam Sharmin was working for a news portal, The Report, until her death.

The news of her death has shocked the entire journalist community.

The family and some friends of Shabnam claimed that she was tortured and then forced to kill herself. Police said they are yet to determine the cause of her death.

Hatirjheel police, who recovered the body from a rented house in the Moghbazar neighbourhood of the capital, said she may have passed away 4-5 days ago.

Mohammad Faisal, a sub-inspector (SI) of the Hatirjheel police station, said Shabnam's younger brother Omar Rashid filed a case naming her husband Saidul Islam, who is a former reporter of a private television, as the accused. He said they could not arrest Saidul Islam as he went into hiding.

Azimul Haque, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon division of DMP, told the Bangladesh Post that they have already stared investigation into the case.

“We’ll arrest anyone we think necessary for our investigation,” he said.

After a post-mortem, the body of the victim was handed over to her family.

Azimul said the autopsy report will be available in next few days. The autopsy report would confirm whether Shabnam committed suicide or she was killed, he said.

Meanwhile, Shabnam's younger brother Omar Rashid said her body was taken to their village home in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. She will be buried in their family graveyard.
