Toukir to play Suhrawardy’s role in Bangabandhu biopic

The government of Bangladesh and India is going to jointly produce a biographical movie of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bollywood's renowned director Shyam Benegal will produce this biopic movie. The 83-year-old Bollywood director has already started casting artistes in various roles. He arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to decide on work, shooting and formal matters.

It is reported that critically acclaimed actor Toukir Ahmed will play the role of great leader Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy in the biopic. The information is confirmed by the actor himself. Toukir was measured for the costume of Suhrawardy’s character at the FDC at 9am on Friday. He was previously selected to participate in the audition in January. Toukir Ahmed said the opportunity to play the role of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy in the biopic of Bangabandhu was a special addition to his career.

About this, Toukir Ahmed said, ‘I am very happy that I could join such a big project. I like anything that’s related to Bangabandhu. It is very special for me to be able to portray Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, his political guru, in a movie about his life. I want to thank and give my best wishes to all those associated with this movie. I am also delighted for the opportunity to see the work of the legendary director Shyam Benegal. I think it will enrich me as a director.’

Meanwhile, actress Dilara Zaman will act as the mother of Bangabandhu in the biopic directed by Shyam Benegal. The remaining characters have not yet been confirmed. The selection process is going on. Initially, the movie was supposed to be made in English but later it was decided to make it in Bengali. The film, which is being made in Bengali, will have Hindi subtitles. 

The budget for the joint production of Bangladesh and India is set at Tk 35 crores. Bangladesh will give 60 percent of this budget and India will give 40 percent. Dayal Nihalani, another Bollywood director and a disciple of Benegal is working as assistant director of the biopic. Atul Tiwari and Shama Zaidi, two successful Bollywood screenwriters, wrote the film.

Nitish Roy, the Indian National Award winner art director, has been given the responsibility of film’s art direction. Pia Benegal, daughter of Shyam Benegal, will play a significant role in choosing costumes for the artistes as costume director. It is Bangabandhu’s birth centenary this year on March 17th. Mujib Year will begin. Shooting will start from that day. The biopic will be completed before March 17th, 2020. The 2 hours and 20 minutes movie will be released in Bangladesh and India.
