Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman stressed on changing the attitude of the people to prevent violence against women, saying that we must also promote gender equitable norms and behaviours and women’s participation in decision-making.

He said this while addressing a discussion session organised by DU Department of Women and Gender Studies and UNDP at Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium on Thursday, marking the International Women's Day.

Department of Women and Gender Studies Chairperson Sanjida Akhtar presided the event while Faculty of Social Sciences Dean Sadeka Halim, Emeritus Professor Dr Nazma Chowdhury and UNDP Project Director Abdul Mannan spoke as special guests. UNDP lead Author and former Director of Human Development Selim Jahan delivered a speech titled ‘Nari manei anari noe'.

Professor Akhtaruzzaman said, “Bangladesh has become a role model of women development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. To achieve sustainable development goals by 2030, the participation of women in the workplace should be further increased and the empowerment of women in the family must also be ensured.” He also commented that there is scope to reform in women's rights laws to eliminate gender discrimination. Lastly, prizes were distributed among the winners of slogan and photographic competition.
