The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Sunday approved a Tk 2,840.39 crore project for the "Further Development of Dhaka University" under the education ministry.

This was among 12 development projects cleared today, involving a combined outlay of Tk 8,149.38 crore.

The approvals came at an Ecnec meeting held at the Planning Commission in Dhaka, presided over by Chief Adviser and Ecnec Chairperson Muhammad Yunus, according to a press release.

Among the approved projects, six are new, four are revised, and two involve extensions of implementation periods without any cost escalation.

The projects cover a mix of infrastructure, education, energy, agriculture, and social development initiatives.

Notable among them is the second revision of the "Construction of Road from Kalurghat Bridge to Chaktai Canal along the Banks of the Karnaphuli River" under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

The Ministry of Home Affairs secured approval for two projects: establishing 20 fire service stations—12 new and eight rebuilt—and developing logistics and freight maintenance facilities for the Bangladesh Coast Guard.

The Local Government Division received approval for the "Rural Sanitation Project" and the third revision of the "Drilling of Canal from Bahaddarhat Baraipara to the Karnaphuli River".

The power ministry received the go-ahead for the implementation of the "Smart Pre-payment Metering Project in Distribution Zones of BPDB".

Additionally, projects to boost women's income-generating skills, expand cultural infrastructure, and strengthen agricultural research were cleared.

The remaining projects involve the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, focusing on railway line maintenance, constructing facilities at Mirpur Cantonment, and expanding the Bangladesh Folk and Crafts Foundation museum building.
